The Teaching System - Part III

Parts I and II of the teaching system emphasized spelling, reading and rudimentary word classification. Part III reintroduces word classification with the presentation of nouns and verbs as well as adjectives. While the child continues to learn to read and spell single words, he/she is now introduced to them in the context of a series of simple sentences which tell the story of a little bear.

Part III utilizes the musical component of harmony to teach the child face perception and emotion recognition within the context of social situations that are built into the story. (Lack of face perception and emotion recognition are hallmarks of autism.) There is a continuation of the modification of the piano keyboard with the introduction of six three part musical harmonies. Each three part harmony sounds like one of the six universal emotions of happy, sad, afraid, angry, surprised and disgusted. Each of these harmonies is marked with matching yellow face stickers.

In addition, three two part harmonies were created and each is marked with red, green and blue circular stickers. Each is representative of a noun, verb or adjective to further expand word classification for the purpose of sentence creation. The following is an illustration of the modified piano keyboard:
