What I Discovered
Through watching Lorena at our family gatherings, I observed that she had a keen interest in music. She enjoyed listening to songs on CD’s, and movies with a musical theme or content would hold her interest and create enjoyment for her. She would also remember lyrics to songs. I thought that if language could be given a musical dimension, it would help her learn to identify letters and then use them to create words.
I did not however, want to incorporate music in its traditional format, but rather use it as a tool to facilitate language acquisition. As such I piggy backed the 26 letters of the alphabet onto 26 keys of a piano. The piano notes were given new names and those names were the 26 letters of the alphabet. This formed the basis for the teaching system.
